The head of Russia’s sole official anti-war party has affirmed his decision to remain in the country and persist in advocating for reforms, despite escalating pressure from the authorities resulting in the exclusion of the party from the forthcoming parliamentary elections. The Supreme Court’s ruling to disallow the post-Soviet liberal party Yabloko from participating in the upcoming vote in September, led by Nikolai Rybakov, indicated the government’s unease with the party’s stance on ending the ongoing conflict in Ukraine resonating with the electorate.
Rybakov emphasized the significance of the overwhelming support from the public over the court’s verdict, citing the vocal protest of hundreds of backers outside the court premises. Once a prominent liberal voice in parliament and a government critic, Yabloko now holds only a few regional seats with no representation in the State Duma, where the Putin-backed United Russia party holds sway.
Despite United Russia’s anticipated dominance in the upcoming elections, Rybakov expressed confidence that Yabloko would pose a stronger challenge if permitted to run. Yabloko is currently appealing the Supreme Court’s decision, which stemmed from allegations of undisclosed campaign support from Western sources, among other accusations that the party refutes.
Rybakov reiterated his commitment to staying in Russia despite stringent censorship laws and wartime regulations that have prompted many dissenters to flee or face prosecution. Notwithstanding the challenging environment, he stressed the necessity of effecting change within the country to alter the political landscape.
Public sentiment regarding the war remains difficult to gauge due to strict government controls on dissent. However, according to the Levada Center, a non-governmental pollster, the proportion of Russians supporting their armed forces’ actions in Ukraine declined to 66% in July, the lowest level since February 2022.
Rybakov highlighted the influx of new supporters drawn to Yabloko’s succinct manifesto advocating for peace and a flourishing democratic Russia, signifying a substantial segment of society desiring an end to the conflict. The party has garnered significant traction on social media, with numerous videos showcasing individuals expressing their support through creative means, such as holding apples or dancing to Russian tunes referencing the party symbol.
