When considering the most fashionable places globally, one might immediately envision vibrant streets in New York or Tokyo. However, TimeOut has identified an unexpected gem closer to home – located discreetly behind a ring road in Manchester.

Ancoats’ Cutting Room Square has secured the 21st position in TimeOut’s prestigious list of the Coolest Streets in the World 2022, marking a significant milestone for Manchester. Surpassing renowned locations like MacDougal Street in New York, Cutting Room Square shares the limelight with top-ranking streets such as Rue Wellington in Montreal and Yaowarat Road in Bangkok.

Exploring the vicinity nestled between Blossom and Hood Street on a sunny weekday afternoon, I sought to gauge the authenticity of its acclaimed status and capture the sentiments of the local community. Opinions varied, with one business proprietor lauding its uniqueness compared to other areas in the country, while a patron argued against its exceptional appeal.

Undoubtedly, its historical significance cannot be disputed, as Ancoats was once hailed as the pioneer industrial suburb globally, renowned for its steam-powered mills during the Industrial Revolution.

Following post-war decline and the waning of UK manufacturing, Ancoats transformed from an abandoned enclave into a thriving neighborhood, attracting residents to its converted red-brick edifices and acclaimed dining establishments.

Among the notable venues in Cutting Room Square are popular eateries like Rudy’s and Elnecot, alongside renowned bars and restaurants such as Erst and Mana, Manchester’s first Michelin-starred dining establishment in over four decades.

The picturesque backdrop of Hallé St Peter’s, a meticulously restored Grade II-listed former church utilized as a rehearsal space, complements the striking copper monoliths adorning its surroundings.

According to Time Out’s Rob Martin, Cutting Room Square stands out for its harmonious blend of traditional and contemporary elements, cultural richness, culinary diversity, artistic ambiance, historical significance, and progressive momentum, encapsulating the essence of Manchester and justifying its inclusion on the esteemed list.

During a late weekday afternoon, the area bustles with activity, exuding a relaxed vibe as patrons revel in al fresco dining and drinks under the sun.

Recently, Cutting Room Square underwent a temporary pedestrianization initiative by Manchester City Council over the Bank Holiday weekend, aiming to infuse a “European feel” to the locale, enhancing the outdoor dining experience and fostering a vibrant atmosphere.

Matthew Kiruba, 25, who frequents the area due to its proximity to his workplace, acknowledges its allure as a prominent destination for young professionals, drawn to its array of upscale bars and dining establishments.

Francesca Raphael, 40, a project manager residing nearby, praises the neighborhood for its diverse culinary scene, vibrant social atmosphere, and strong community spirit, emphasizing its appeal and liveliness.
