A British attorney passed away shortly after receiving a Brazilian butt lift and liposuction procedures overseas due to feeling pressured to maintain a slim appearance in the legal field, an inquest revealed.
Diarra Brown, aged 28, died on October 26, 2021, following a four-hour surgery at a private facility in Turkey. The inquest disclosed that the young professional took out a substantial £10,000 loan to fund multiple cosmetic surgeries at the Private Memorial Hospital in Bahcelievler, Turkey, which included a Brazilian butt lift, liposuction, and an arm lift.
The lawyer opted for these procedures after facing mockery for being overweight, with the aim of boosting her confidence, as stated by the Black Country Coroners Court. Following the surgery, Diarra shed eight dress sizes, going from a size 18 to 10, but she began experiencing discomfort just hours after the operation on October 22.
Complaining of feeling cold, sore, bruised, and in severe pain, the 28-year-old from Wolverhampton, West Midlands, struggled with mobility. Despite raising concerns, the medical team led by Dr. Sevket Gokhan Beyhan assured her family that such post-operative symptoms were normal and would subside over time.
Returning to the hospital on October 25 for a bandage change, Diarra’s condition deteriorated rapidly. She displayed signs of distress, including sweating, high temperature, breathlessness, lethargy, and loss of consciousness. Despite evident deterioration, she was advised to return to her hotel while her daughter stayed in the hospital overnight.
Tragically, her condition worsened, leading to a suspected cardiac arrest. Three days after the surgery, Diarra succumbed to a likely cause of sepsis, as revealed during the inquest.
Dr. Vanya Gant, a specialist in clinical microbiology and infectious diseases, reviewed Diarra’s medical records and postmortem examination. His findings indicated that Diarra had succumbed to uncontrolled septic shock.
In a statement conveyed by assistant coroner Kelly Dixon, Mrs. Brown highlighted the pressures Diarra felt to conform to body standards within the legal profession, emphasizing the teasing and discrimination she faced due to her weight. Mrs. Brown also recounted Diarra’s interactions with the surgeon in Turkey, where she sought reassurance about the safety of the procedures through WhatsApp.
This marked the culmination of Diarra’s weight loss journey, as she expressed her desire for no further interventions post-surgery. The inquest remains ongoing.
