A man who spent a quarter-century in prison expressed relief after a judge overturned his murder conviction. The reexamination of his case uncovered new evidence that raises doubts about the prosecution’s conduct, leading to the dismissal of the murder charges by a Manhattan judge.
Harry Ruiz, who has maintained his innocence since his 1994 conviction for the shooting death of Emmanuel Felix in Harlem, finally saw justice when Judge Robert Mandelbaum criticized the former assistant district attorney for her uncooperative stance during the reinvestigation.
Upon leaving court, Ruiz emotionally stated, “I feel like I can finally breathe again.” The case took a turn when a New York City detective stumbled upon Ruiz’s file and became convinced of his innocence. Subsequent investigations revealed that crucial evidence, including financial assistance to a key witness’s mother, had not been disclosed to the defense as required by law.
Despite Ruiz’s alibi being supported by three family members, he was convicted of second-degree murder at age 25 and sentenced to a lengthy prison term by Judge Harold Rothwax. Further review uncovered that a federal informant had confessed to paying someone to kill Felix, exonerating Ruiz from involvement.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg acknowledged the new evidence that undermines the trial’s integrity, while Ruiz’s attorney emphasized the deliberate misconduct by the former district attorney’s office in suppressing critical information.
