With the Easter holiday season approaching, many Brits are gearing up to travel, but there’s a crucial oversight that could lead to significant financial losses while packing.

At bustling airports, a seemingly harmless item in your luggage can become a gateway for thieves to exploit your personal information and belongings.

According to Mike Harvey, the managing director of 1st Move International, it’s risky to print your family’s complete names and home addresses on luggage tags.

Harvey emphasized the importance of finding a balance when filling out luggage tags to ensure easy identification of your bag while safeguarding your personal data. Sharing excessive details could expose you to identity theft, financial scams, break-ins, and other security threats.

He cautioned against disclosing home addresses as this information could signal to thieves that your residence is unoccupied. Avoiding revealing passport numbers or insurance information is also crucial, as these details can aid scammers in crafting fraudulent schemes convincingly.

Furthermore, providing details about valuable items on your luggage can attract unwelcome attention.

A recent report featured on Fox News revealed that discarded tags, including those provided by airlines, were exploited in a scam involving fraudulent reimbursement claims using owners’ full names and flight details.

To prevent potential disruptions, Harvey suggested keeping luggage tags concise, containing only essential contact information such as names, phone numbers, and email addresses.

He recommended including your full name matching your passport, facilitating airline personnel in reuniting you with lost luggage. Additionally, adding your phone number with the country code for swift communication and an email address, preferably a dedicated travel email, can help in keeping correspondence separate from your primary inbox.

Concerning disposable tags, it is advisable to keep them attached until safe disposal at home is possible.

A debate on safety measures has emerged on Reddit, with suggestions such as placing contact details inside the suitcase as a backup plan if the luggage tag is lost, allowing airlines to identify the owner.

Others proposed using a work address or a family member’s residence if a physical address is necessary
