“Clevedon: A Charming Coastal Gem with History and Hollywood Connections”

Share

I grew up in a charming UK coastal town for the first two decades of my life. This town boasts a magnificent Victorian pier, an infinity pool filled with seawater, and one of the world’s oldest cinemas.

Aside from its rich history, this town has a vibrant independent community, has been a filming location for numerous movies, and has even attracted celebrities such as the members of One Direction.

Located in North Somerset, Clevedon holds a special place in my heart. During my childhood, I enjoyed meeting friends at the seafront promenade, renting movies from the local store, swimming at the Strode leisure center, and exploring the green spaces and bike paths nearby.

As I grew older, I frequented the various pubs with their inviting beer gardens like the Little Harp Inn and The Salthouse along the seafront. For a night out, a minibus ride to the only club in town, Vibe, was a common choice. Bristol was easily accessible via bus links, and Yatton train station provided a quick connection to Bath.

Although I’ve since moved away, Clevedon remains one of my favorite destinations to visit. The town offers a range of attractions, from the grand pier and expansive seafront to the eclectic mix of independent shops and dining options. Exploring Clevedon on foot is a delightful experience.

Clevedon beach, with its 850-meter expanse of golden pebbles and rocky outcrops overlooking the Bristol Channel, is a popular spot for swimmers despite its not-so-blue waters. The marine lake provides a unique swimming experience.

The town’s seawater infinity pool is a favorite among locals and visitors alike, offering a refreshing dip or a leisurely kayak or sailing excursion. The Grade I listed Victorian pier, stretching over 1,000 feet and adorned with intricate ironwork, is a focal point for many, with thousands of brass plaques displaying personal messages.

Renowned poet Sir John Betjeman hailed the pier as the most beautiful in England. It has received accolades as Pier of the Year multiple times. The pier gained further fame when One Direction shot a music video there in 2014, attracting attention to the town.

Apart from hosting celebrities, Clevedon has been a filming location for popular TV series like Broadchurch and movies like Never Let Me Go. The town’s Hill Road is now a hub for independent shops and cafes, offering a unique shopping and dining experience.

The town center features a mix of branded stores, cozy coffee shops, and a weekly market. The Curzon, one of the world’s oldest cinemas, continues to charm visitors with its red velvet seats and classic ambiance.

For a traditional British seaside excursion, Clevedon is a must-visit destination. Whether you’re looking for family-friendly activities or a leisurely stroll, the town’s undeniable charm and historical significance make it a truly special place to explore.
