The FIA has confirmed an agreement for changes in regulations to be implemented during the 2027 and 2028 Formula One seasons. The key modification involves shifting the engine power split from the current 53% combustion and 47% electric to a future ratio of 60% combustion and 40% electric.
According to the FIA statement, discussions among the FIA, FOM, Teams, and Power Unit Manufacturers have led to a consensus on adjustments to the Formula 1 Technical, Sporting, and Financial Regulations for the mentioned seasons. These changes aim to address concerns related to energy management under the new Power Unit framework identified since the beginning of the 2026 season.
The proposed modifications are designed to tackle issues concerning energy management, fuel energy flow characteristics, and enhancing the flat-out nature of Qualifying sessions without compromising the positive and thrilling racing brought about by the new regulations.
The agreed package outlines a phased reevaluation of the Internal Combustion Engine and Energy Recovery System contributions over the 2027 and 2028 seasons. It includes specific tweaks to internal combustion engine performance, fuel energy flow, energy recovery system deployment, and offers more flexibility in managing energy resources.
Initially planned for full implementation before the 2027 season, a revised timeline will introduce the changes gradually due to the withdrawal of support from some power unit manufacturers. As a result of these adjustments, there will be reduced reliance on the battery, aiming to address issues such as derating on long straights.
