Keir Starmer has called for a resolution following the breakdown of US-Iran peace talks today.

During a morning phone conversation, the Prime Minister and the Sultan of Oman emphasized the importance of de-escalation for the US, Israel, and Iran. They stressed the need for a sustained ceasefire.

A spokesperson from Downing Street stated that the Prime Minister spoke with Sultan Haitham bin Tarik al Said of Oman about the recent peace discussions in Pakistan. They both urged the conflicting parties to seek a way forward and maintain the ceasefire to prevent further tensions.

The leaders discussed the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, with the Prime Minister expressing gratitude for Oman’s efforts in assisting distressed sailors in the region. They also reviewed international initiatives to ensure safe passage for shipping, with ongoing collaboration to restore long-term navigation freedom.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to Oman’s security and updated on cooperation with Ukraine in drone technology. He highlighted Ukraine’s significant contributions to the region amid concerns about Russia’s support for Iran’s aggressive actions.

The Prime Minister has been leading European endeavors to reopen the critical shipping lane in the Tehran-blockaded Strait of Hormuz, responsible for a substantial portion of global oil transportation.

Efforts to implement a US-Iran ceasefire to reopen the Strait have encountered challenges since its recent agreement, leading to a surge in gas prices due to the ongoing closure.

Next week, the UK will host additional discussions with partner nations to address reopening the vital shipping passage in the Strait of Hormuz, continuing efforts to ensure free navigation.

US Vice President JD Vance is currently in Pakistan for peace talks with Iran, but a 21-hour negotiation session concluded without reaching a deal early Sunday.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting expressed disappointment over the lack of progress in Islamabad talks, emphasizing the importance of ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the conflict in Iran and its global impacts.
