The suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, California, armed with guns and knives, reportedly intruded the Washington Hilton where the incident occurred.
President Trump, unharmed in the incident, was quickly escorted off the stage. Authorities apprehended the armed individual, who was a guest at the event, and scheduled his court appearance for Monday. The police indicated that the suspect acted alone, although they did not disclose his target or motive for the attack.
Trump mentioned that his wife, Melania, was the first to perceive the situation, recognizing the alarming noise as a gunshot. He described hearing a loud noise, initially mistaking it for a tray falling, and later realizing it was actually a gunshot.
Reflecting on the incident, Trump expressed shock at the occurrence during a White House press briefing shortly after the incident. He emphasized the swift response of security personnel in handling the situation.
Video footage shared on Truth Social by Trump captured the suspect’s attempt to evade security barriers as Secret Service agents pursued him. One officer sustained a non-life-threatening injury, while the gunman was subdued and taken for evaluation at a hospital.
The suspect, Allen, is facing charges related to firearms, including assaulting an officer with a deadly weapon. The shooting disrupted the prestigious event, which was intended to celebrate journalism and the First Amendment and attracted increased attention due to Trump’s presence as the first sitting president to attend since taking office.
