“Report Urges Ban on Ticket Resale Above Face Value”

A recent report on the live events industry is calling for the immediate implementation of a ban on reselling gig tickets above face value. The report highlights how music enthusiasts often miss out on popular events due to ticket touts utilizing automated software to snatch up tickets rapidly.

While the government promised to enforce the ban last year to prevent inflated ticket prices, no specific start date has been announced yet. The Culture, Media and Sport Committee’s commissioned review stresses the need for legislation to prohibit ticket resale above face value promptly and ensure strict enforcement.

The report outlines a Fans’ Charter with 50 recommendations aimed at enhancing the live music sector. One key aspect is the clear communication and transparent application of ticket pricing in advance. Additionally, it urges the industry to resist implementing dynamic surge pricing, where ticket prices fluctuate based on demand.

Fans expressed dissatisfaction with major online ticketing platforms, citing unfair treatment, high ticket prices, and inadequate measures against bots and online touts. The report also suggests that venues should provide clear set start and finish times, offer free earplugs and drinking water, and establish a Music Fan Association akin to existing ones for football fans.

Lord Brennan, the review chairman, emphasized the importance of addressing fans’ concerns to foster a respectful relationship between the music industry and its supporters. The review stemmed from a previous report on grassroots music venues, which highlighted financial challenges faced by venue operators, touring artists, and independent promoters.

Dame Caroline Dinenage MP, Chair of the CMS Committee, emphasized the significance of fan input in shaping the future of the music industry. The report’s recommendations empower fans to influence the industry positively, ensuring a sustainable and fan-centric approach.

Consumer Law Expert Lisa Webb from Which? condemned ticket touting practices and called for a price cap to combat online touting. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport pledged to review the committee’s report meticulously and reiterated its commitment to supporting the music industry, including efforts to eradicate ticket touting and enhance the fan experience.
