Keir Starmer has rejected Donald Trump’s aggressive proposal to block the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing the UK’s stance on keeping the crucial shipping route open rather than closed.

The Prime Minister made it clear that the UK does not support the blockade and advocates for the Strait to remain fully accessible. During his recent visit to the Gulf region for discussions on the operational status of the shipping route, he reiterated the UK’s commitment to staying out of any potential conflict with Iran.

Mr. Starmer emphasized the importance of maintaining open navigation in the Strait to ensure the uninterrupted flow of oil and gas to the market. He highlighted that any disruption in the route could lead to increased energy prices for consumers, a scenario he aims to prevent by keeping the Strait fully operational.

When asked about potential UK involvement in a US-led military blockade, the PM affirmed that the UK does not back such actions. He emphasized that the UK’s diplomatic and operational efforts in the region are focused on reopening the Strait entirely to stabilize energy prices and minimize the impact of the conflict on UK citizens.

The upcoming UK-France summit will concentrate on developing a collaborative and international strategy to safeguard shipping in the Strait of Hormuz post-conflict. The objective is to restore freedom of navigation in the region, which is essential for alleviating cost-of-living pressures globally.

Recent statements from President Trump regarding a potential naval blockade in the region have raised concerns about escalating tensions. The UK, along with other European partners, continues its efforts to resolve the standoff and reopen the critical shipping route that facilitates a significant portion of global oil transport.

Despite a US-Iran ceasefire agreement to reopen the Strait, challenges have emerged, leading to a surge in gas prices due to the ongoing closure. The UK remains actively engaged in diplomatic initiatives to address the situation and ensure the resumption of normal shipping operations in the Strait of Hormuz.
