Living solely on the state pension is becoming increasingly challenging as prices rise due to the conflict in Iran. The full new state pension now stands at £241.30 per week (£12,547.60 annually), but not everyone receives this amount as it is based on their National Insurance record.
To qualify for the full new state pension, individuals typically need 35 years of contributions, with a minimum of ten years required to receive any pension at all. Some individuals receive the older basic state pension, which is valued at £184.90 per week (£9,615 annually).
Research from Royal London indicates that 12% of adults above state pension age rely solely on the state pension, with 16% of women and 8% of men having no additional retirement income.
Sarah Pennells, a consumer finance specialist at Royal London, noted that many pensioners are finding it increasingly challenging to sustain themselves on the state pension alone. She highlighted that even those receiving the full new state pension may find it insufficient for covering essential expenses like food, heating, energy, and council tax.
The conflict in Iran has caused a surge in oil prices, leading to an increase in fuel costs. Unleaded petrol prices have risen by 19% since the conflict began, with diesel prices up by 34%. Analysts predict a significant rise in energy bills this summer, with the Ofgem price cap expected to reach £1,929 per year for the average household.
Moreover, mortgage rates have also climbed, with a two-year fix averaging 5.89% and a five-year fix at 5.77%. Rebecca Lamb, external relations manager at Money Wellness, advised individuals to explore available support options, including Pension Credit, which tops up weekly income for those on low incomes above state pension age.
Pension Credit, particularly the “Guarantee Credit” component, can significantly boost weekly income for eligible individuals. Lamb emphasized that many households are not claiming Pension Credit, missing out on essential financial assistance that could alleviate financial strain, especially amidst rising costs.
With the escalating expenses and the prevalence of fuel poverty among older individuals, Lamb stressed the importance of raising awareness about available benefits and providing support to ensure pensioners receive the assistance they are entitled to.
