Renowned Spanish bullfighter, José Antonio Morante Camacho, also known as Morante de la Puebla, suffered a severe injury during a bullfight at La Maestranza bullring in Seville. The incident occurred when a bull named ‘Clandestino’ gored him, causing a 10cm wound that punctured his rectum. Morante, a highly regarded figure in bullfighting circles, was participating in the April Fair event when the bull’s horn struck him as he tried to evade the animal’s charge.
Video footage captured the moment when the bull’s horn made contact with Morante’s buttock, leading to visible distress. Prior to this injury, Morante had already been injured in a minor incident during the same event, where a bull grazed his ear. Following the goring incident, Morante underwent a two-hour surgical procedure to address the significant damage caused by the bull’s horn.
Medical reports described the injury as a 10cm wound on the anal margin, partially affecting the anal sphincter muscles and perforating the rectum wall. Doctors at the Maestranza bullring infirmary conducted a specialized surgical intervention to repair the damage. The incident has raised concerns about Morante’s well-being, overshadowing the festive atmosphere of the event. Morante’s decision to remove his traditional bullfighter’s pigtail before the event had generated excitement among spectators, with many eagerly anticipating his return to the ring.
Despite the unfortunate incident, Morante had made a highly anticipated comeback to bullfighting, participating in various events, including the April Fair and the Corpus Christi festival. The bullfight where he was injured attracted a sold-out audience of 12,000 spectators.
