Peter’s daughter, Bettina, described him as adept at keeping secrets and skilled at eliciting information from others due to his charming demeanor. The Last Spy, directed by Katharina Otto-Bernstein, premiered at the UK Jewish Film Festival and is set to debut in select theaters.
Born into a wealthy family in Mainz, Germany, Peter’s lineage was tied to the H. Sichel Söhne winery. Fleeing the Nazis with his family to Bordeaux during the rise of Hitler, Peter eventually found himself serving in the US military and later recruited by the CIA for intelligence work.
Trained in unconventional warfare techniques, Peter played a pivotal role in various missions, including recruiting German prisoners of war during the invasion of Southern France. His experiences inspired the 1951 film Decision Before Dawn.
Transitioning from espionage, Peter became a key figure in the CIA, particularly in post-war Berlin and Eastern Europe operations. His contributions were crucial in shaping intelligence strategies during the Cold War era.
After retiring from the CIA, Peter ventured into the wine business, successfully promoting Blue Nun wine globally. Despite his diverse experiences, Peter fondly reminisced about his time at Stowe and remained a committed supporter of the school.
Reflecting on his life, Peter acknowledged the challenges of espionage and the allure it held. He believed that the curiosity for uncovering secrets would always endure among people.
