The UK Government is urging British citizens who have summer vacations planned as an increasing number of flights are being canceled. Airlines are grounding flights to save money due to rising expenses caused by the Middle East crisis and soaring jet fuel costs, impacting the peak travel season. Approximately 13,000 flights worldwide have been canceled in May, with 1,468 flights from major UK airports, resulting in 275,616 canceled seats.
Although the total number of cancellations seems high, airlines have also added numerous flights, reducing the overall net cancellations significantly. The current net cancellation count at Heathrow Airport is approximately 100.
In response to concerns over flight cancellations and low jet fuel supplies, a collective statement has been issued by the Foreign Office, Department of Transport, and Department of Energy Security. They reassure travelers that there is no immediate need to alter travel plans, emphasizing that UK airlines have pre-purchased jet fuel, and airports maintain adequate stocks for resilience.
The global shortage of jet fuel, spurred by the Iran conflict, is posing a more severe challenge to airlines than the Covid-19 pandemic, according to AirAsia’s CEO Tony Fernandes. Fernandes highlighted the unprecedented triple increase in jet fuel costs, causing significant disruptions in fuel supply routes.
Fernandes also cautioned about the potential collapse of low-cost airlines, citing the recent closure of US budget carrier Spirit. The conflict has led to the loss of up to two million seats from the cancellation of 13,000 flights in May, impacting airports in Istanbul, Turkey, and Munich, Germany.
As a response to the mounting pressures on airlines, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has relaxed the “use it or lose it” rules, allowing airlines more flexibility. She is also promoting domestic vacations to mitigate potential disruptions to summer holiday plans. These rules mandate that airlines must utilize their airport slots within a specified timeframe to retain them.
