“Air Calédonie Faces Bankruptcy, Hopes for Revival”

A significant airline that plays a crucial role in transportation has declared bankruptcy, resulting in the suspension of its flights. However, there is hope for its revival.

Air Calédonie, the primary airline serving New Caledonia, a French territory in the South Pacific, filed for bankruptcy recently due to unrest among customers in the territory’s outer islands. Demonstrators obstructed essential airfields in protest against the company’s decision to relocate Air Calédonie’s operations from the Nouméa Magenta airport to New Caledonia’s international La Tontouta base, which is over 50km away from Nouméa city.

The blockade significantly worsened Air Calédonie’s financial situation, leading to an estimated daily loss of around £73,000 and making it challenging for the company to meet its payroll obligations promptly. Consequently, half of its workforce has been placed on temporary contracts with reduced hours and pay. New Caledonia President Alcide Ponga expressed concerns, stating, “It appears that someone is seeking the demise of AirCal.”

Despite facing challenges, Air Calédonie remains committed to preserving its essential role in New Caledonia and developing a sustainable recovery strategy. Established in 1954, the airline has now entered a judicially-supervised recovery process initiated by the Commerce Tribunal in New Caledonia.

Despite unsuccessful negotiations over the weekend, the Nouméa Commerce Tribunal has taken control of the airline’s operations and initiated a salvage plan for Air Calédonie. Public Prosecutor Yves Dupas emphasized that this may be the company’s last opportunity for survival. The recovery process aims to maintain the company’s cash flow and operational continuity for at least six months, with the possibility of extension, enabling a gradual return to sustainable business activities.

The ultimate goal is to ensure the company’s financial stability and gradual recovery to establish a viable long-term operational model.
