A recent study has revealed that some lake sturgeon in the Great Lakes could be over 400 years old, challenging previous estimates of their lifespan. These ancient-looking fish, which can reach up to two meters in length and weigh up to 180 kilograms, are facing extinction in Ontario and the Great Lakes region due to overfishing and habitat destruction. About 99% of their historic population has been wiped out, leading to ongoing efforts to raise and release young sturgeon to aid in their recovery.
The study, led by Ed Baker, a fisheries scientist from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, utilized data spanning over four decades on captured and recaptured sturgeon in the Great Lakes. Contrary to traditional methods of age estimation based on growth rings, the study calculated individual sturgeon growth rates between captures to determine their potential lifespan.
Surprisingly, some sturgeon were found to grow at a slow pace, with one male sturgeon only growing seven centimeters over 34 years. This slow growth led researchers to speculate that these fish could live for centuries. The findings have significant implications for conservation efforts, particularly in reevaluating existing plans that may need adjustment to ensure the long-term survival of these remarkable creatures.
Trevor Pitcher, a biologist at the University of Windsor, emphasized the need to reconsider conservation strategies for sturgeon, given their potential to live for centuries. Pitcher highlighted the critical role sturgeon play in maintaining ecosystem balance by controlling invasive species populations.
Moreover, Perry McLeod-Shabogesic, an elder from Nipissing First Nation, emphasized the cultural significance of sturgeon, considering them as “grandfather fish” due to their longevity and revered status in Anishinaabe tradition. He shared stories of the sturgeon’s historical abundance and spiritual significance, portraying them as beings that transcend categorization.
In light of these new insights into the extraordinary lifespan of lake sturgeon, stakeholders are urged to adapt conservation efforts to safeguard these ancient giants and preserve their vital role in the Great Lakes ecosystem.
