The 41-year-old football icon’s contract with Al-Nassr, a club based in Riyadh, is set to expire in June next year, and he shared with Vogue magazine that he is unlikely to pursue another contract beyond this season. Ronaldo expressed, “This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy.”
Having scored a remarkable 976 career goals, the Portugal forward recently tied the knot with his longtime partner, Georgina Rodriguez. Ronaldo spoke about his future plans, stating, “I have my future all mapped out. I have so many things to keep me busy that to tell you just one thing is hard. Because football could leave a big hole, you have to fill your time in various ways, not just one.”
Ronaldo highlighted his intentions to engage in different activities for enjoyment, such as traveling more, playing padel, a sport he particularly enjoys, and continuing to relish the rewards of his hard work over the past 25 years. His outstanding performance last season, where he netted 28 league goals, contributed significantly to Al-Nassr clinching the Saudi Arabian championship in May, securing his first trophy since joining the club in Riyadh and the team’s first league title since 2019. Following his recent wedding, Ronaldo missed Al-Nassr’s initial title defense match, observing from the sidelines as the team secured a 3-0 victory over Al-Fateh.
Despite missing the season opener, Ronaldo remains an influential figure within the team, with Al-Nassr coach Ange Postecoglou acknowledging his presence and support. Looking ahead, Ronaldo may feature in the upcoming King’s Cup match against Al-Diriyah on Tuesday. Postecoglou emphasized the importance of recovery for the players given the tight schedule.
Ronaldo’s reflections on potentially retiring coincided with Lionel Messi’s recent comments about his uncertain future following the passing of his father. Messi, aged 39, revealed his doubts about continuing his football career, stating, “I used to just play football, and now I’m really not sure if I’ll carry on doing it for much longer.”
