The union representing WestJet’s flight attendants has disclosed the specifics of the tentative agreement reached with the Calgary-based airline this week following a one-day strike. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) announced that the deal entails an increase in wages exceeding 18% over a three-year period, along with a new “duty period premium” to compensate for ground duties. Additionally, the agreement includes extended time off, enhanced food and uniform allowances, and various other benefits.
A significant number of WestJet flights across Canada were grounded during the extended holiday weekend due to the imminent strike by 4,400 cabin crew members who commenced the strike early Sunday. However, a tentative agreement was reached between the airline and the union on Monday morning, resulting in a gradual return to normal operations for WestJet.
The cabin crew members will vote on the proposed deal in the upcoming weeks to determine its acceptance.
