At least four individuals have died and several others have been wounded in a school shooting in Turkey. The tragic incident occurred today at Ayser Çalık Middle School in Kahramanmaraş, as confirmed by the local governor of the region, Mükerrem Ünlüer.
Governor Ünlüer stated, “There is currently an attack happening. We have received reports of injuries and, unfortunately, fatalities at one of our educational institutions. The situation is under thorough investigation.”
Following the incident, emergency response teams were dispatched to the site where Governor Ünlüer confirmed the loss of four lives. Witnessed by images captured outside the school, students and staff were seen evacuating the premises in a state of panic.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the identity of the assailant responsible for the attack. Turkey’s Justice Minister, Akın Gürlek, mentioned that an immediate investigation was launched post-incident, with public prosecutors actively examining the scene.
Gürlek emphasized the importance of media outlets respecting the confidentiality of the ongoing investigation. He assured that relevant updates on the investigative process would be shared by the appropriate authorities.
This marks the second school shooting in Turkey within a span of two days. The previous incident occurred in the Siverek district, where a 17-year-old gunman opened fire at Ahmet Koyuncu Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School, injuring sixteen individuals before taking his own life.
Police and medical responders swiftly arrived at the scene on Tuesday morning after the attacker, a former student born in 2007, carried out the assault. The Interior Ministry of Turkey confirmed the identification of the perpetrator and reported injuries to ten students, four teachers, a police officer, and a canteen worker during the attack.
