An ex-police officer had raised concerns about a series of sexual assaults before the brutal murder known as the ‘Beast of Birkenhead’ case. Peter Sullivan was wrongly convicted for the murder of Diane Sindall and served 38 years in prison before being exonerated due to modern forensic evidence not matching his DNA found on the victim’s body.
Diane Sindall, who worked at the Wellington pub, was found dead in Birkenhead after her van broke down on August 1, 1986. She was discovered in an alley the next day, partially undressed and fatally beaten.
The former officer revealed that he had noticed a string of attacks in the area with a similar modus operandi just before Sindall’s murder, indicating a potential escalation towards more serious crimes. Despite his warnings to investigate further, he claimed that two senior detectives advised against it. Shortly after, Sindall was tragically murdered, confirming his fears.
Merseyside Police stated that there was no current evidence linking Sindall’s murder to other crimes. However, the investigation team remains open-minded, especially after a recent ‘cold case’ review shedding new light on the case.
Efforts to solve the 1986 murder include a large team of detectives using advanced DNA profiling techniques and releasing a detailed description of the suspect for the first time. A reward of £20,000 from Crimestoppers is available for information leading to the conviction of Sindall’s killer.
A witness reported seeing Sindall arguing with a man before she disappeared, possibly the last time she was seen alive. Police suspect this man, described as white, slim, in his early twenties, and wearing specific attire, could be the perpetrator. DNA samples have been collected from various locations, with a focus on close male relatives due to the Y chromosome evidence found.
