Striking a balance between screen time and quality family moments can often feel like a daily challenge.
With children increasingly using their devices for educational purposes, staying connected with friends and family, gaming, and streaming content, determining a reasonable screen time limit becomes more complex.
As the Easter holidays approach, the question arises: How can families find a compromise that satisfies everyone?
Throughout 2026, we are launching The Family Chat initiative in collaboration with Tesco Mobile to promote open and honest discussions within families about online safety.
Renowned author and podcaster Giovanna Fletcher engages in conversations with parents and their children to address the challenges they encounter, how they are handling them, and how Tesco Mobile’s online safety tools can provide valuable support.
These valuable resources include a downloadable family pledge, enabling families to establish simple agreements regarding healthy screen time practices and ensuring children’s online safety.
Giovanna mentions that she and her husband, Tom, are currently managing the situation effectively. However, she emphasizes the importance of regularly reviewing their approach.
She states, “Our rule is to prevent phone usage from becoming the sole activity, especially for an 11-year-old, given the numerous other enriching activities available.”
“We are fortunate that our children have diverse interests, although this may evolve as they grow older, prompting further necessary conversations.”
She adds, “Our eldest son is passionate about music, enjoys outdoor activities, and frequently invents new games with his siblings.”
“We provided him with one of our old phones when he started secondary school, but fortunately, he has not become overly engrossed in it. We will continue adapting and monitoring the situation.”
For the Karley family – consisting of Anna, Emmanuel, and their three children, Joshua (13), Isaac (14), and Ruby (17) – smartphones are indispensable for staying connected, managing school responsibilities, and navigating their busy schedules.
However, with three teenagers often seemingly attached to their devices, Anna and Emmanuel are eager for the entire family to explore screen time management in an engaging and stress-free manner.
To facilitate discussions, the Karleys participated in the Team Mum v Team Dad Online Safety Challenge.
Divided into two teams, with Anna and Joshua on one team and Emmanuel, Ruby, and Isaac on the other, they tackled various challenges without using their phones.
These challenges involved ranking screen-related activities like streaming and social media against offline pursuits such as cooking and reading.
Upon completing the challenges, they committed to implementing their learnings by completing Tesco Mobile’s family pledge, outlining simple agreements concerning screen time, privacy, and sharing.
Anna and Emmanuel plan to utilize the expert guidance and resources accessible on Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub to help the family maintain a healthy balance between their digital engagement and real-world interactions.
They have already initiated a 9.30 pm phones-off policy to allocate more quality family time, engaging in activities like enjoyable quizzes together.
Anna remarks, “The challenges revealed our heavy phone usage, so it’s crucial for us to adhere to the family pledge. We will display it on the fridge and collaborate to follow the new rules for a fresh start!”
