A headteacher at a primary school in Newcastle, Barbara Middleton of Shiremoor Primary School, has turned down the Government’s offer for a free breakfast club, citing financial and logistical challenges. Middleton expressed concerns about the mandatory allocation of at least 30 minutes before lessons for breakfast, stating that the provided funding was insufficient to ensure safe operations.
On a different note, Sir Keir Starmer visited a school breakfast club in Manchester and announced the addition of 500 more free breakfast clubs. The Department for Education (DfE) highlighted that many schools found the scheme feasible and fair.
Under this initiative, schools receive £25 per day plus £1 per participating pupil from the government to cover food and staffing expenses. Craig Brown, the headteacher of Dean Bank Primary and Nursery School, embraced the scheme despite estimating that the government’s funding of £10,000 for the academic year would not fully cover the program costs.
Middleton’s school currently provides each child with a bagel every morning, partly funded by the charity Magic Breakfast, even for latecomers. However, the government’s breakfast program requires all schools to host the club for at least 30 minutes before lessons, posing staffing and logistical challenges for Middleton’s school with over 300 children to accommodate in one hall.
Implementing breakfast in classrooms before lessons was deemed unfeasible by Middleton, who highlighted that this time was crucial for teachers to prepare for the day.
