President Donald Trump expressed discontent with the current status of the US-UK special relationship and issued a warning regarding a potential trade deal with Britain.
The remarks from the unpredictable US leader, who has consistently criticized Keir Starmer lately, coincide with escalating tensions due to the US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran, resulting in the closure of the critical Strait of Hormuz and a subsequent surge in global oil prices.
During an interview with Sky News, President Trump mentioned his favorable view of Mr. Starmer but criticized the UK government’s stances on energy and immigration. When asked about the current state of the special relationship, Trump initially responded with ambiguity before expressing disappointment in the lack of support from the UK when needed.
He went on to say, “The relationship has been better, but it’s regrettable. We granted them a favorable trade agreement, but that can be revised.” Trump also commented on the UK Prime Minister, stating, “I appreciate Starmer, but I believe closing North Sea oil was a significant error, evident in your high energy prices compared to the global average.”
When asked if the strained relationship would overshadow the upcoming King’s Royal visit to the US, Trump downplayed the impact, citing his longstanding acquaintance with the King and his lack of involvement in the situation.
Contrary to Trump’s views, UK Treasury minister James Murray emphasized the enduring depth of the special relationship during an interview on Sky News.
President Trump’s statements follow Chancellor Rachel Reeves’s condemnation of the US actions in the conflict with Iran. In an interview with The Mirror, Reeves expressed frustration and anger over America’s involvement in a war causing repercussions for families in the UK.
Reeves criticized the lack of clarity and planning in the US decision to engage in the conflict, leading to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and adverse effects on families worldwide, including those in the UK.
