Keir Starmer has expressed concerns about the volatile situation in the Middle East following Donald Trump’s initiation of a blockade on the Strait of Hormuz. The UK Prime Minister emphasized the importance of dealing with the conflict in the region calmly yet firmly, acknowledging the fragile nature of the ongoing two-week US-Iran ceasefire.

In a statement to Members of Parliament (MPs), the Prime Minister shared insights from his recent two-day visit to the Gulf, where discussions were held regarding the reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The vital shipping lane, responsible for a significant portion of global oil and gas transportation, had been initially blocked by Iran. However, Trump’s decision to impose a blockade on the strait has escalated tensions further.

Following the breakdown of talks between the US and Iran, oil prices surged above $100 per barrel. Starmer highlighted the significant shift in the global landscape, emphasizing the need to address the heightened volatility and insecurity with composure and strength.

The Prime Minister reiterated the UK’s commitment to working with international partners to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, stressing the detrimental impact of the blockade on the world economy. Starmer emphasized the necessity of restoring freedom of navigation in the strait and rejected the idea of joining the US blockade.

Starmer announced plans to convene a summit with French President Emmanuel Macron to focus on diplomatic solutions and military strategies to facilitate safe passage through the strait. He also called for including Lebanon in the ceasefire agreement amidst escalating tensions in the region.

In response to calls for reconsidering the upcoming state visit to the US, Starmer emphasized the importance of the UK’s relationship with the United States and the historical significance of the visit commemorating the 250th anniversary of diplomatic ties.

Addressing the economic repercussions of the conflict in Iran, Starmer pledged to strengthen economic ties with European allies and emphasized the need for a different approach to address the changing global landscape. He also reaffirmed the commitment to achieving energy independence to alleviate the burden on energy consumers.

Starmer’s focus on making Britain energy independent to mitigate the impact of international events on energy bills resonated with the public sentiment. He stressed the importance of transitioning away from fossil fuels to gain control over energy costs and ensure a stable energy future for the country.
