“UK Warned Over Heavy Reliance on US Defense”

Britain’s former defense secretary has issued a warning about the country’s heavy reliance on the United States, stating that this dependency is no longer sustainable. Lord George Robertson emphasized that even after Donald Trump’s departure from office, the UK’s relationship with Washington is unlikely to return to normal.

During an event at Chatham House, Lord Robertson highlighted the shifting global landscape, pointing out that factors such as the rise of China and skepticism towards globalization will lead the US to adopt a more transactional approach in its foreign policy. He urged the British government to increase defense spending in response to the growing instability in the world.

Lord Robertson criticized the notion that the US would always come to the UK’s aid in times of crisis, describing it as a misguided belief that has weakened Britain’s own military capabilities. He stressed the need for the UK to become a more self-reliant military player, stressing that the current high level of dependence on the US is no longer viable.

The longstanding “special relationship” between the US and the UK has faced strains, particularly after Keir Starmer’s government resisted President Trump’s pressure to join military actions. Lord Robertson, a key figure in the Government’s Strategic Defence Review, accused Starmer’s administration of being complacent about defense matters and called for a shift away from excessive reliance on the US for security.

The House of Lords International Relations and Defence Committee has called for a reassessment of the UK’s relationship with the US, advocating for stronger ties with European nations as a counterbalance to a potentially less reliable ally. Despite these concerns, the US ambassador to London, Warren Stephens, reaffirmed the US commitment to supporting the UK’s security and prosperity.

Stephens emphasized the importance of collaboration between the US and the UK in addressing complex modern threats through preparedness, cooperation with allies, and sustained investment in collective security. He reiterated that the US remains deeply committed to working alongside its closest ally, the United Kingdom, to ensure the safety and prosperity of both countries.
