A 21-year-old man expressed disappointment after being turned down for a binman position by Southampton City Council, despite completing a nine-month unpaid internship. Bryan Rowe, who has ADHD and myotonic dystrophy, worked diligently during his internship but was rejected twice by the council. His mother, Claire Rowe, criticized the council’s decision as unfair and cruel, emphasizing the impact it had on her son.
Mr. Rowe, who had aspired to be a binman since childhood, felt disheartened by the rejections and questioned his abilities. His mother highlighted his dedication during the unpaid internship and questioned how individuals are expected to gain experience if not given opportunities.
Following the rejections, Ms. Rowe lodged a formal complaint with the council, prompting them to review their recruitment practices. In response, a spokesperson for Southampton City Council stated that all applications and interviews had been conducted in accordance with the council’s procedures, while wishing unsuccessful candidates well in their future pursuits.
