A father and son duo from Norfolk, George, 57, and Josh Kohler, 23, have embarked on a remarkable global cycling expedition lasting 400 days. Their adventure has taken them through more than 25 countries, showcasing a wide range of landscapes from desolate deserts to rugged mountains and picturesque rice fields.

Since commencing their journey on 29 March last year, the pair has covered thousands of miles, with the total distance expected to surpass 30,000 kilometers upon completion. Their charitable efforts have raised over £30,000. Upon finishing their extraordinary voyage next month, George and Josh will have spent nearly 400 days pedaling around the globe, conquering an impressive 180,000 meters in elevation – equivalent to scaling 20 Mount Everests.

On track to secure three Guinness World Records titles, including ‘Fastest father and son to circumnavigate the world on bicycles’, ‘Furthest distance cycled by a father and son’, and ‘Most countries cycled through by a father and son’, the duo recently shared their experiences with The Mirror following their South America leg.

During a break in Rio, George, a chimney sweep business owner, reflected on the challenges and triumphs of their journey, emphasizing the mutual support and respect they’ve cultivated amid hardships. Notable highlights of their expedition include traversing the remote Nullarbor Plain in Australia, marveling at the majestic Iguazu Falls in South America, and waking up to a sky filled with hot-air balloons in Cappadocia, Turkey.

Despite encountering obstacles like headwinds, scorching heat, and demanding terrains, the duo singled out China as the most captivating destination they visited. Josh expressed their reluctance to leave after spending two months cycling through the country, praising its diverse culture, breathtaking scenery, and hospitable people.

Their global excursion has not been without its challenges, with Brazil standing out for its demanding topography. Both George and Josh highlighted the difficulties faced in South America, particularly in Argentina, where cycling infrastructure was lacking, and extreme temperatures made the journey arduous.

As their journey nears its end, with only a few weeks remaining, the duo aims to break records and complete their voyage in Norfolk on 2 May after pedaling through Portugal, Spain, and France. Reflecting on their transformative experience, Josh acknowledged the emotional impact of the journey on their father-son relationship, emphasizing the strength and bonds they’ve forged through adversity.

Beyond their personal growth, George and Josh have raised significant funds for UNICEF and Bicycle Links, a Norwich-based organization supporting individuals with refurbished bikes and mental health services.
