The city of Markham is gearing up to host the NTT IndyCar Series, along with other motorsports series, this weekend for the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy event. While IndyCar has a history of racing in Toronto since 1986, this will be the first time the race will be held outside the city, featuring a brand-new track layout.
The event will take place on a 3.52-kilometre, 12-turn course that spans across the Unionville GO station grounds, York University Markham Campus, and the Markham Pan Am Centre. To facilitate transportation to the event, attendees are encouraged to utilize GO Transit, York Region Transit, or drive via Highway 407, with parking available west of the event grounds.
Metrolinx is enhancing service on the Stouffville Line to accommodate the influx of racegoers. Additional trips will be available from Union Station to Unionville GO in the mornings and afternoons on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Furthermore, York Region Transit will offer increased service frequency, and shuttle services will be provided by Markham between designated parking lots and the event venue.
Residents of Markham have been navigating road closures and construction activities in preparation for the event. Several roads, including parts of Enterprise Boulevard, Kennedy Road, YMCA Boulevard, University Boulevard, and South Unionville Boulevard, will be closed until Monday morning, with some restrictions continuing until August 27 for track dismantling.
The main event, the IndyCar race, will feature top drivers like Alex Palou, the current points leader and a four-time series champion. Other contenders to watch include Pato O’Ward, Kyle Kirkwood, David Malukas, Christian Lundgaard, Rinus Veekay, and local talents like Anthony Martella and Chase Pelletier.
Drivers have noted the unique challenges of the Markham track compared to Toronto’s bumpy roads. The smooth track surface and elevation changes present new obstacles for the racers. Tickets for the event can be purchased for Saturday and Sunday, with Friday’s practice and qualifying sessions open to the public for free as part of Fan Friday, encouraging donations to Make-A-Wish Canada upon entry.
